Doel – Town of ghosts

Doel, Belgium, Harbor

No where

We are located close by Antwerp, relatively near us is also the harbor of Antwerp, the second largest of the whole Europe. Sometimes a harbor like that needs to grow. If it grows, it usually does not mind little things left on it’s way. Little things like villages.

Doel, Belgium, Graffiti

One of those villages, emptied form the way of a brand new tidal doc, is Doel. Doel is, or was, a small town, few streets and a couple of hundred houses. Stubbornly, it is still standing, for a moment, but it is doomed.

Doel, Belgium, Nuclear

It was emptied from its inhabitants, but there are still a few tough ones remaining, holding on to their properties. The town church is up there still. Tilting to its side a little bit, but never the less sounding its bells.

Among those remaining residents are a large number of drug addicts, who seek shelter in the shadows of the empty buildings. It also offers an empty canvas for multiple graffiti artists, who decorate the houses, giving them new stories, faces and lives. Over looked by the towers of a nuclear power plant. It is the arena of expressing opinions, objections or just skills.

Atmosphere of Doel is unique. You see street art literally in every wall. There is persistence hanging around the houses, that are still maintained. There is despair in the dungeons of drug users and a certain fatality, an unavoidable faith of the whole town, waiting for the machines to come and demolish it from the face of the earth.

Hi there! This is me, a Finn living in Belgium. In love with a Waffle, my companion in crime. Eager to travel, explore and climb a mountain, when ever one happens to be on the route. This blog is about going to places and being in love, seasoned with useless wonderings about life. Welcome on board!

    1. It is certainly worth visiting! The place has such a weird atmosphere. It will not be out there for too long though, I am afraid, since the building project is going to start sometime soon.

      1. I have to go check that blog out! I can’t apparently find a strict timeline for the demolishing plan, but I am pretty sure, that the village is still standing in December ! 🙂

BTW, you would probably be interested also on a abandoned fun park? We have one in the western part of Belgium, Dadipark: http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/dadipark

      2. Wow, that park seems cool too, thanks! I have visited Spreepark in Berlin and would love to see more of them 🙂 Belgium seems like a promised land of urban exploring!

      3. Haha! Glad you like it! 😀 Indeed Belgium has surprisingly lot of history in its buildings and villages! Many people just do not see past Brussels for some reason 🙂 You have found quite some nice locations in that blog of yours! Even in Finland! :O

      4. I think we’ll have to do a Belgium tour. 😀 Yep, Finland is also full of cool abandoned sites, one only has to keep their eyes open to find them!

      5. Definitely! For a small country there is a lot to see. 🙂 And if you happen to need housing, give a yell, we have some rooms to spare!

Maybe next time I visit home, I make a theme out of empty and abandoned places of Finland! 🙂

  1. Demolishion of a couple of houses had starten, but the most part will still be standing. If you like graffiti and streetart, Doel is the place to be. You can hang around there for a whole day
